Hybrid potato breeding

Intro

Potatoes are the world’s third largest staple crop, after corn, rice, and wheat. They are grown and eaten almost everywhere around the world.

Solynta has made hybrid breeding applicable in potato. So what, is that special? Yes, it is.

For the first time in history, we can now quickly combine favourable traits of different potato varieties to make better tasting, disease resistant and higher yielding, improved varieties. This has been done for years with foods like – for example – tomato, peppers and cucumbers, but no-one has ever achieved it effectively for potatoes before. Delivering tremendous added value to consumers, farmers and processors.

On top of that these Solynta varieties can be grown from so called ‘true seeds’ rather than the ‘seed-tubers’ which are usually used to grow potatoes. Just 25 grams of pristine true-seeds can replace 2500 kilos of bulky and perishable seed-tubers. The logistical benefits are tremendous.

We think our technology represents a huge breakthrough, because we now can produce better and more nutritious food, with less use of water, less environmental impact, less pesticide use, on less land and with improved adaptability to climate change.

We accomplish this by breeding elite parent lines (through continuous crossing and backcrossing to assemble and secure beneficial traits in these parent lines). We then produce true seeds which combine these beneficial traits of the parents and on top of that show hybrid vigour.

Solynta unlocked hybrid breeding and true seeds in potato, establishing a genetic platform creating exceptional value going forward while at the same time contributes to solving important societal problems
